The International Air Transport Association said March global airline passenger traffic grew more slowly than it did a year earlier. "The slowdown in the demand growth continues the sharp downward trend which began in December 2007 as the impact of the U.S. credit crunch began to be felt in the airline industry," according to IATA. Also citing fuel costs, IATA director general Giovanni Bisignani said, "The fortunes of the industry have taken a major turn for the worse."

All-premium carrier Eos Airlines ceased operations after becoming the fifth U.S. commercial carrier this month to file for bankruptcy. CEO Jack Williams blamed "external forces" for knocking out the carrier, "just as we were working toward closing on an investment that would have carried us to corporate profitability in 2009." Eos' failure follows that of fellow all-premium, transatlantic start-up Maxjet Airways.

In the case of travel agent programs and compensation, the grant of such immunity would enhance the dominance that these mega-carriers already possess as individual airlines vis-a-vis travel intermediaries that serve the needs of consumers. With their collective might, they will be in an even stronger position to dictate to travel agencies the terms for the sale of their air products, and will thus be empowered to raise the costs of air travel for the many business and leisure travelers who rely on the services of professional travel agencies to find the best fare and best flight.
Paul Ruden, American Society of Travel Agents vice president of legal and industry affairs, in ASTA's filing to the U.S. Department of Transportation, asking for a delay in the approval of the SkyTeam alliance antitrust immunity request
