The 17 July crash of a TAM aircraft at São Paulo's Congonhas Airport will have "a major impact" on the airline and Brazil's other leading carrier Gol, according to Calyon Securities analyst Ray Neidl. Congonhas "is the heart of the Brazil commercial aviation industry," Neidl wrote in a research note. "This accident ... could have a major affect on the aggressive growth plans of the two carriers going forward." Press reports indicated the crash of the Airbus A320 killed 200 people onboard and on the ground.

Air France KLM is considering a bid for Iberia as part of "much-needed consolidation for the efficiency and profitability of the air transport sector." Iberia last week agreed to open its books to a consortium including British Airways that has expressed interest in making an offer for the Spanish airline.

Accor's hotel revenue during the first half of 2007 increased 8.6 percent to €2.9 billion (US$3.9 billion), reflecting "the continuing uptrend in the European hospitality industry cycle underway since fourth quarter 2006." The company cited slightly higher occupancy and a 6.9 percent jump in overall average daily rate.

The U.S. Department of Transportation tentatively granted authority to Virgin Atlantic Airways to commence flight operations between any point in the European Union and any point in the United States, effective 30 March 2008. British Airways last month won similar DOT approval. Neither Virgin nor BA has yet announced specific services for transatlantic routes to or from European cities other than their mutual London base.

Travel security firm International SOS added a messaging service and custom risk ratings to its online Traveler Locator Service. The Short Message Service feature enables client companies to send text messages to travelers around the globe, "since sending e-mail messages to mobile phones is not always reliable." The custom risk ratings allow clients to tailor risk profiles for the areas in which they operate by adding their own local knowledge and eliminating "information they already have."
