Bankrupt Japan Airlines Group intends to retire 103 aircraft, "completely eliminate" unprofitable routes and cut about 16,000 employees, according to a reorganization plan submitted to Tokyo District Court. The international network would focus on "high-yield demand" to "major cities" in Asia, Europe and the United States. JAL in the domestic Japanese market plans to "maintain our network centering on Haneda Airport" with an emphasis on "more frequent service using smaller aircraft." Aircraft retirements would include "all" Boeing 747-400s, Airbus 300-600s, MD-81s and MD-90s. The company, which filed for bankruptcy in January, will seek court approval for its reorganization plan on 30 November.

There is no evidence at all that consumers over the years have gotten a worse deal because of a lack of competition. Airlines have come and airlines have gone, alliances have come and alliances and have gone, but ultimately fares keep going down.
