Marriott International by 2015 plans to open 30 new properties in Europe, doubling to 80,000 its room count in the region.

The company announced it would add hotels in such cities as Ankara, Budapest, and Moscow.

Marriott International's "group room nights on the books" are down about 2 percent year over year, according to COO Arne Sorenson. "Still, with pent-up demand and easy comparables, we expect our in-the-year-for-the-year group business to improve from these levels." CFO Carl Berquist also highlighted "improving transient and group demand" in Europe and the United Kingdom, "better-than-expected corporate demand" in China and stronger "last-minute corporate demand" in Australia and Korea. Overall, Marriott is tracking occupancy growth across all segments, particularly the hardest-hit luxury segment.

To improve efficiencies, Marriott is reorganizing global operations into four regional divisions: the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Middle East-Africa, according to Marriott International CEO Bill Marriott. Former executive vice president of global sales and marketing Amy McPherson will lead the European division while former executive vice president for the Eastern United States Dave Grissen will head up the Americas division, according to officials. Managed separately up to this point, oversight of the Ritz-Carlton brand also will be handled within each newly defined regional division. Some Ritz-Carlton operations will be incorporated into Marriott corporate headquarters to provide regional management teams "a bit more power and the ability to make decisions," according to Marriott president and COO Arne Sorenson.

Marriott International partnered with AT&T to offer Cisco Telepresence facilities in 25 Marriott, J.W. Marriott and Renaissance hotels in such cities as Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, New York, San Francisco, Shanghai and Washington D.C. The first systems are expected to go live by the end of October, according to a statement.

Marriott International appointed new area directors of sales and marketing for Continental Europe--Theo Ocks for Western Europe, Vicky Varfis for Eastern Europe and Iris Baugatz for Central Europe. All three will be based in Eschborn, Germany collectively responsible for almost 100 properties in 22 countries.

Marriott International introduced a foreign currency commission payment program in which commission payments due to travel agencies in 22 countries would be directly deposited into an online account and the currency conversion fee would be cut to $3 from $4. Marriott "guarantees that commission payments will be sent within 15 business days."

Marriott International expects "special 2008 corporate rates to increase in the 6 percent to 8 percent range," said CFO Arne Sorensen. "Special corporate rates are strong. Transient bookings for the next few weeks are strong. And 2008 group bookings are stronger. We're now finalizing negotiations with large corporate customers for next year's pricing, while property-level negotiations with large corporate customers are just beginning."

Marriott International, Ritz-Carlton and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide each are preparing new hotel properties in Beijing. Marriott said its second Renaissance hotel (and eighth overall) in the Chinese capital--a 540-room property--would open in 2008. Starwood said it would debut the Four Points by Sheraton brand in Beijing in mid-2009 with a 301-room property in the Haidan district, a base for "more than 1,000 foreign companies." Starwood has four other Beijing properties, including the Westin Beijing Financial Street scheduled to open this year. Ritz-Carlton in October also will open a new hotel in Beijing's financial district, its second property in the city.

Marriott International experienced strong global revenue trends during its fiscal first quarter, including a 7 percent increase in non-North American systemwide revenue per available room night. "Asia was particularly strong, as RevPAR in China increased 11 percent," said executive vice president and CFO Arne Sorenson. "The U.K. is showing considerable strength, particularly business travel to London. Performance in continental Europe remains mixed, with strength in eastern Europe, but only modest RevPAR improvements in Germany and France."
