The U.S. Department of Transportation made final its approval for antitrust immunity among oneworld partners

. American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia now can implement a transatlantic joint venture and join oneworld members Finnair and Royal Jordanian in tighter alliance partnerships. Like the European Commission, DOT set conditions on approval, notably the transfer of slots at London Heathrow to competitors for new transatlantic services.

Continental Airlines plans to share codes on Aegean Airlines flights between Athens and Frankfurt, London Heathrow, Munich, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Rome. The Star Alliance partners on 23 August began code sharing on Continental flights between Newark and Athens, and on "selected flights operated by Aegean Airlines in Europe."

US Bank Corporate Payment Systems announced plans to self-issue cards in Europe in 2011 to service multinational clients instead of through a partner bank. The bank for more than five years has owned operations in Europe that allow it to issue cards, according to US Bank CPS president Rob Abele. The bank will continue to issue cards through alliance partners in countries in which it doesn't own operations. The bank also intends to open a call center in Europe. Multinational clients are asking for a "single global contract and single point of approval for commercial cards," Abele said.

Continental Airlines and Brussels Airlines plan to begin sharing codes on dozens of routes between and from Brussels and Newark. Effective 9 August, the Star Alliance partners will cooperate on Brussels Airlines' service from Brussels to nine European and 12 African destinations, and on Continental's Newark-Brussels route and flights from Newark to five U.S. cities.

Air, hotel and ground transactions processed by Carlson Wagonlit Travel's wholly owned operations and joint ventures this year through June rose 13.2 percent to 29.4 million. Sales volume totaled $12.3 billion, up 16.6 percent "at current exchange rates," the company announced. Sales volume in Latin America grew 48.1 percent, in Asia-Pacific 43.5 percent, in North America 18.2 percent and in Europe, Middle East and Africa 7.7 percent. CWT identified $781 million in new sales during the period, excluding renewals, but declined to disclose net new sales. Comparing the results to the same period in 2008, CWT president and chief executive officer Douglas Anderson stated, "Traffic has not yet returned to pre-recessionary levels."

Air Berlin agreed to join the oneworld alliance and establish codeshare and frequent flyer program deals with American Airlines and Finnair. Subject to government approvals and scheduled to take effect 1 November, the code shares would provide Air Berlin customers access to 15 AA destinations in the United States and several Finnair destinations throughout Europe and Asia. Air Berlin is Germany's second-largest carrier, with hubs in Berlin and Dusseldorf.

The European Commission accepted "remedies" proposed by American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia for their planned transatlantic joint venture. ational.travel/AA-BA-Iberia-joint-venture.2010031101">Concessions offered by the airlines and accepted by EC include surrendering slots at London Heathrow or London Gatwick airports for flights to Boston, New York, Dallas and Miami; making available slots at New York JFK for services to London; and combining fares, offering connections and linking loyalty programs with other airlines. "We have analyzed these commitments, we have consulted other players in the market and we have concluded that the remedies the airlines have introduced will secure for passengers the ational.travel/news.php?cid=AA-BA-Iberia-joint-venture.Jun-10.09">benefits of the alliance together with the prospect of additional services provided by other operators," according EC vice president responsible for competition policy Joaquín Almunia. The U.S. Department of Transportation ational.travel/news.php?cid=Oneworld-Transatlantic-ATI-antitrust-immunity-Pacific-ATI.Feb-10.18">tentatively approved the proposed antitrust-immunized JV. Final approval is expected soon.

The European Commission cleared the proposed British Airways-Iberia merger, concluding that "the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area or any substantial part of it." In examining the London-Madrid and London-Barcelona markets for example, EC determined that ational.travel/news.php?cid=BA-Iberia-merger.Apr-10.14">the merged entity would "continue to face sufficient competition from other carriers active on these routes, and therefore that passengers will have adequate alternatives to fly on these routes after the merger."

DOT finalized approvals for American, Delta and Hawaiian airlines to serve Tokyo's downtown Haneda Airport. American Airlines said it would begin daily service from New York JFK effective 20 January 2011; Delta won the right to offer daily service from Detroit and Los Angeles; and Hawaiian Airlines announced 31 October 2010 as the start date for flights from Honolulu. The U.S. Department of Transportation made available the new route authorities following completion in December 2009 of a ational.travel/news.php?cid=Open-Skies-Japan-US.Dec-09.10">U.S.-Japan air services pact.

Alitalia formally began participating in a transatlantic joint venture also including Air France-KLM Group and Delta Air Lines. Alitalia officials will "immediately" join the joint venture's working groups responsible for sales, frequent flyer programs and several other areas, according to a statement. "Alitalia also will be included in all joint venture initiatives, including ational.travel/news.php?cid=Delta-Northwest-merger.Apr-08.24">joint sales contracts, which launched in January 2009."
