Virgin Atlantic claimed a 5 percent increase in "business class market share" during its March to May quarter as it flew 15 percent more "Upper Class" passengers than a year earlier. Quarterly revenue grew 10 percent year over year.

Air, hotel and ground transactions processed by Carlson Wagonlit Travel's wholly owned operations and joint ventures this year through June rose 13.2 percent to 29.4 million. Sales volume totaled $12.3 billion, up 16.6 percent "at current exchange rates," the company announced. Sales volume in Latin America grew 48.1 percent, in Asia-Pacific 43.5 percent, in North America 18.2 percent and in Europe, Middle East and Africa 7.7 percent. CWT identified $781 million in new sales during the period, excluding renewals, but declined to disclose net new sales. Comparing the results to the same period in 2008, CWT president and chief executive officer Douglas Anderson stated, "Traffic has not yet returned to pre-recessionary levels."

Air Berlin agreed to join the oneworld alliance and establish codeshare and frequent flyer program deals with American Airlines and Finnair. Subject to government approvals and scheduled to take effect 1 November, the code shares would provide Air Berlin customers access to 15 AA destinations in the United States and several Finnair destinations throughout Europe and Asia. Air Berlin is Germany's second-largest carrier, with hubs in Berlin and Dusseldorf.

Client travel spend increased 19 percent and client revenue rose 6 percent during the first three months of HRG's fiscal year, which ends on 31 March 2011. "Despite the limited visibility that is inherent for corporate travel management, at this early point in our financial year our confidence is increasing," HRG stated. "We expect travel activity amongst our existing clients to continue to increase in line with macroeconomic conditions."

Amadeus announced an agreement with Premier Inn, a budget hotel chain in the U.K. and Ireland, for expanded distribution to such markets as France, Germany, Italy and Spain. To be implemented during the next month, the deal provides wider access through the Amadeus GDS to 580 Premier Inn locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The U.S. Department of Transportation made final its approval for antitrust immunity among oneworld partners. American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia now can implement a transatlantic joint venture and join oneworld members Finnair and Royal Jordanian in tighter alliance partnerships. Like the European Commission, DOT set conditions on approval, notably the transfer of slots at London Heathrow to competitors for new transatlantic services.

United Airlines reported Atlantic and Pacific premium cabin booking growth of 38 percent and 46 percent, respectively, during the June quarter versus a year earlier. Overall unit revenue on Asian routes jumped 52 percent--including 64 percent in China and 46 percent in Japan--partly due to "improvements in yields and load factors in premium cabins," said president John Tague.
